The efficiency of an engine relies on several factors, including the health level of the spark plugs, the fuel injectors, and the cylinders. The cylinders are usually not problematic, but sometimes when the piston is not sealing well, the problems will gradually arise, such as the lose of power, the reduced level of engine oil, and the over consumption of gasoline fuel. The reasons for the piston problems could be as a result of several factors. For examples, the piston rings wear off, the intake and/or exhaust valves have carbon buildups, and last but not least, and can be the most common problem, the blow off head gasket that is situated between the cylinder head and the cylinder block. If such problems as stated previously occur, then probably conducting an engine compression test can be helpful.
Testing the compression pressure to find out these problems may not seem to be intuitive or direct, but compared to dismantling all engine components, including the timing chain, just to have a look to see if the valves, the pistons, the head gaskets are okay, then just by removing the spark plugs to test the engine compression may assist you in saving time and analyzing what could go wrong without disassembling and re-assembling everything.
Before really dive into the compression test, first thing you want to do is to stop the fuel supply. We are going to test the compression only, so we don't really need the fuel to be exploding in the combustion chamber for real. Go to side of the engine bay, and locate the fuel pump relay or fuse on the fuse-relay box (you can always find the right one on the inner side of the box cover). Another thing you want to do is to disable the ignition system, but this is not a necessary step because you will need to access to the combustion chamber on each cylinder by removing the spark plug cable and the spark plug itself, so it is already disabled by then. Then just remove a spark plug, and find a suitable sized spark plug adapter from this tool set.
After the spark plug adapter is connected to the spark plug hole, connect the soft black hose to the adapter, and then connect the pressure gauge to the soft hose. Go to the driver seat and turn on the engine, and record the pressure as shown on the gauge. Repeat the same steps to other cylinders. Finally compare the pressure recorded from different cylinders, and then you will be able to see if there's anything wrong.
The connector on the soft black hose has a special and unique lock design so the hose can be tightly connected to the adapter. This design is to prevent the adapter be left on the engine after the test is done and the soft black hose is disconnected from the engine. But if you think that's too much work, this tool also includes two tubes to help you carry out quick compression tests. The tubes come in two shapes, one straight and one with an angle. The straight one is for inline cylinders, and the angled one is for V shaped engines because the cylinders are usually facing diagonally.
