Inner Tie Rod Tool Kit with Self-locking Cage and Roller Suitable for Tie Rod with Ø35-45mm Fastener
• Special head design grips tie rod end firmly by turning clockwise and anti-clockwise
• Application range Ø35-45 mm, mainly for European passenger cars
• Tool NOT designed to be used with an air/impact wrench
When driving with an unsettling noise and a feeling of the steering wheel not really controlling the directions, it could be that the tie rods should be replaced. Take a quick look at the tie rod area, where you can check the outer tie rod, the locking nut to the control arm, the jam nut between the inner and outer tie rods. If the outer tie rod looks fine, it could be that the shaft connecting to the ball joint socket on the inner tie rod has some loose and floppy gaps that eventually lead to the wobbling feeling while driving. The gaps are usually as a result of the dust, debris, or whatever particles falling into the ball joint connecting area after the rubber boot failed from having cracks, torn, or worn from constant compressing and decompressing motions when the wheels are turning. Another cause, which is less common but it doesn't mean that it won't happen, is that power steering fluid is leaking through the power steering rack and the inner tie rod end, but this is much easier to find by visual inspection.
Replacing an inner tie rod is fairly easy once you have the right tool. There are several tools that you can choose but usually they are the socket or some mechanism that can clamp the inner tie rod head and you will still need to connect to an extension bar and other hand tools subsequently, but this robust and sturdy tool manufactured by Cosda is a one-piece tool that's specifically designed for removing and installing inner tie rods.
The tool's head has an internal cage with three rollers or tabs that are retractable so the design can grab the irregular inner tie rod end easily with an application range between 35 mm - 45 mm. The retractable feature is very helpful so you don’t have to use different horseshoe shaped adapters just like other similar tools on the market. After gripping the tie rod end, just by turning the tool counter clockwise and the inner tie rod can be removed. The tool end has a half inch square drive and a 27 mm external hex, so you can choose to use a 1/2" drive ratchet wrench or a 27 mm box wrench for removal. The long and hollow tube part of the tool has knurling on the surface, which provides a comfortable grip after the initial removal is done. The internal cage with rollers is not directional, so you can also use this tool to install the inner tie rods.
