Tips for Refilling the Cooling system

COOLING SYSTEM AIRLOCKS

how to get rid of an air lock in cooling system

Using the vacuum method to refill coolant into the cooling system may be the best way to do so because you will be able to get 100% of air out of the system, and then you will not need to do the time-consuming air bleeding after the coolant is refilled. It's not only quick, but also simple, and actually a lot of automotive manufacturer's service manual do suggest using the vacuum method for the new coolant refill job.

For preparation, please make sure that the cooling system is totally cooled down and depressurized before opening the radiator cap or the expansion tank cap. Failure to do so may cause the pressurized and hot coolant gush out of the opening and, if the coolant touches human skin, that will cause serious burns. This procedure is not emphasized in the video below but this has to be taken into attention by all means. After opening the cap on the radiator or recovery tank, you can lift the car and drain the old coolant by removing the drain plug at the bottom of the radiator. For your reference, this vacuum tool does not suck the old coolant out of the cooling system, the vacuum function is only to suck the air out of the cooling system after the old coolant is drained in the conventional or gravity way.

After the old coolant is drained, put the drain plug back and lower the car to the ground level. Use the hook on top of the tool to hook itself under the bonnet. Connect the cone-shaped rubber adapter to the blue hose, and then place the conical adapter to the radiator or coolant reservoir opening. The cone shape has its elasticity that helps the adapter to be tightly attached to the radiator filler neck when there is a vacuum inside the cooling system. On the other hand, connect the coolant hose to the connector at the bottom of the tool. Prepare a container with adequate volume of premixed coolant inside, and make sure that the coolant hose end is constantly under the liquid surface.

Plug in the air hose to the air connector that is located on top of the tool device. After making sure that everything is well connected, press the air switch to ON, and turn on the air valve, and then you will hear the air flow starting quickly. When you take a look at the gauge you will notice that the needle is starting to drop, which mean that the vacuum is being created in the cooling system slowly. We will wait for the needle when it goes down to the yellow area as indicated on the gauge reading. At the same time waiting for the needle to drop to the yellow area, you may see that the cooling system upper hose is collapsing, and that's totally normal. Just a sign that the pressure inside the cooling system is getting smaller than the atmospheric pressure. Shut the air valve off when the gauge needle goes in the yellow zone.

You can leave the gauge under the vacuum for a while to check if there are any leaks in the cooling system. This step is not necessary but will be helpful because this is like an additional function of this device. And we are pretty sure that you don't want to waste the new coolant after it is filled into the cooling system and realize that there is a leak somewhere in the cooling system.

Once all checked, turn on the coolant valve, and the new coolant will be sucked into the cooling system under vacuum immediately. While waiting for the new coolant to be introduced into the cooling system, keep an eye on the coolant container. Make sure that the hose end is always under the liquid surface because you don't want the job to be interrupted when the hose is actually sucking air, not coolant. Turn off the coolant valve when the vacuum is going back to atmospheric pressure. Remove the conical rubber adapter from the cooling system and check the fluid level. Top up the to the suggested level by pouring the new coolant manually, and you don't have to worry about the air going into the cooling system because the air bubbles will come back up to the surface with a small amount. And there you go, this is how you refill the coolant with a vacuum device. You will not need to go through the air bleeding procedure with this method.
