Cooling system failure could be one of the most common reasons for an engine breakdown, and performing a cooling system pressure test will help you determine if there are any leaks in the cooling system, which eventually will cause engine overheat. Performing a cooling system pressure test is simple and intuitive. You can do it whenever the engine is not running, but of course, please make sure that the engine is cold. And having a Cosda's universal radiator pressure tester kit will help you carry out the leak test fast and accurately.
To begin with, you will want to locate where your car releases excessive pressure via the radiator or the expansion tank. Some vehicles, mostly seen on European car brands, will have a single outlet on the expansion tank, so it is easier to locate the cap in that case. Then remove the radiator cap or recovery tank cap after ensuring that the engine is cool. As we know that the cooling system is running under a pressurized environment and the coolant is carrying the heat generated by the internal combustion chamber away by the coolant. If you open the radiator cap while the engine is still hot, the coolant liquid will be squeezed out of the cooling system like a fountain by the pressure retained in the cooling system. The hot liquid may cause serious burns on the persons or objects around, and it's very dangerous.
Find a suitable radiator cap adapter from this kit by comparing the size and threads (if applicable - because there are some radiator caps that are twist-on style), and connect the cap adapter to the radiator or recovery tank outlet. Then attached the quick couple at the hose end of the pressure pump. The high quality pressure pump allows you to hook on the cap adapter outlet in an instant. Operate the hand pump to pressurize the cooling system. It may take some effort but it won't be very tiring. Be careful to pump the proper value of the pressure. Do not exceed too much from the standard pressure indicated on the radiator cap surface or as specified in the automotive manufacturer's service manual. Most passenger cars' cooling systems operate in the range between 12-15 psi. After pumping to the correct pressure, leave the pump for a while - 10 to 15 minutes would be sufficient. Check the pressure value, if the gauge needle does not fall at all, your cooling system is luckily free of any leaks. On the contrary, if the gauge reading is lower than 15 minutes before, and try to listen to any hiss in the engine bay but if your working environment doesn't allow you to do so because it's too noisy, use a torch / light to see if there are any places in the engine bay that has bubbles or rusts. The pressure may also drop without any visible leaks, and that's where things get tricky. It usually indicates that there are internal leaks in the engine, for example, a blown off head gasket, but then that will require further and more detailed investigation.
