A pressure - vacuum gauge tester tool is a very helpful diagnostic tool that all mechanics can consider to have in their toolbox. In simple words, this tool set is able to tell you if the part(s) you are testing on can hold or leak air. With this pressure-vacuum device, you can tell if the fuel lines with holes or cracks or leaks somewhere. Other areas that you can test are, for example, the carburetor needle, EGR system, and gasket, and to see if the fuel filter is allowing fuel to pass through or has blocks so insufficient amount of fuel is supplied to the engine in the end. The small case included in this tool set provides adapters and parts that you can use to connect to the areas you are going to test on a car.
As for the gauge, there is something worth understanding is the units used to indicate the pressure and vacuum. On the inner circle, you will see kPa, which applies for both pressure and vacuum. But on the outer circle, the units becomes tricky. For the pressure, it is the pound per square inch (PSI) that most people are familiar with, but for the vacuum part, the unit changes to inches of mercury (InHg) so when you are carrying out the vacuum test according to the manufacturer's service manual, make sure that you are reading the correct unit. In the case when the units vary, please go online and convert the units on unit converter websites. The small switch underneath the gauge can switch from pressure to vacuum by the type of tests you need, and the pressure release button at the bottom of the gauge provides risk free disconnection after the tests are done.
Another most common usage for the tool is to draw the old brake fluid out of the wheel cylinders. When we have poured new brake fluid into the brake system via the master cylinder brake reservoir, keep the reservoir with constant supply of the new brake fluid, and we can head to the wheels for brake bleeding. In most cases, what you have to is to locate the wheel that is the farthest from the master cylinder reservoir. Usually it's rear right wheel, but if the car you are servicing is a left-hand drive, the wheel to start brake bleeding would be the rear left wheel. Use the brake bleeder valve adapter as provided in the small case in the tool set, and hook it on the brake bleeder valve, connect the adapter to a soft hose, and a reservoir cup with the lid that has two protruding holes, and another soft hose to the gauge tool. Make sure that you have set the setting to the vacuum side of the gauge. Once you start to pump the gauge, the vacuum will gradually be created in the reservoir cup and the old brake fluid will be extracted. Move on to the next wheel when the old brake fluid comes out without any bubbles.
