The trend to use nylon oil pan as well as nylon oil drain plug may have started in the early 2010s, and came to be more common on some automotive manufacturers, including Audi, BMW, Citroen, Ford, Peugeot, and Volkswagen. The nylon based parts can also be seen on some trucks, for example, DAF.
The automotive manufacturers have been seeking opportunities to increase fuel efficiency. There are several ways to increase fuel efficiency theoretically, and one of the methods is to reduce the weight of the car. The engine may be the heaviest part in the engine compartment, and reducing the weight of an engine can be the primary thing to do if the auto technicians want to reduce the overall weight.
Conventionally the oil pan is made of casting iron or aluminum, and the use of nylon-based material can reduce some weight compared with their metallic counterparts. When the oil pan or oil sump switched to become nylon, it wouldn’t make sense if the drain plug is still metallic because the hardness doesn’t match, and the threads on the oil sump may be damaged overtime. Eventually, the oil pan and the oil drain plug are both turned to become nylon based. The most predominant type of nylon used in Nylon 6-6, which is a tough type of nylon with high wear resistance.
On the other hand, as we know that nylon is not as durable as metal, but the working environment for the nylon oil pan is with oil and heat, so the automotive manufacturers that use nylon oil sumps recommend changing the oil drain plug each time when we are changing the engine oil.
Cosda has this tool set for removing and installing nylon oil drain plugs found on VAG family, including Audi, SEAT, Skoda, and Volkswagen. The VAG nylon drain plugs have a peculiar shape and we will need to use a special tool to mesh with the slot on the drain plug. The slot looks like an internal “I” shape, so the regular hand tools may not be able to fit into the slot. This tool set not only provides this special I shaped bit to mesh with the nylon drain plugs, but also 6 new drain plugs for replacing after each oil change.
